New Kids on the Farm

Cheney (Chinook Breeze) blessed us this afternoon with 2 doelings, one is 8.4 lbs, the 2nd is 6.8 lbs.  She was an EXCELLENT mom, wow what a great delivery it was.  She was bred to Al Itasca, our purebred buck that we almost lost last winter, he is a trooper.

Karl – The Rooster

As you may have heard recently, Karl (formerly Carly, b4 his coming out of the closet), had turned into a mean ol SOB, attacking Pat and DJ at every chance he got.

Well, we decided it was time for Karl to have an attitude adjustment, so Friday evening, Pat snatched him by the legs out of the coop, and locked him into a dog cage.  He was not a happy camper, but had no way to get through the metal caging.

Next morning, I setup the turkey roaster pot with water, and got it up to temp, and went to the barn to retrieve that mean ol SOB.  I grabbed him by the feet, and off we went, back up the hill to visit the cones!  In he went, I was quick to do the deed, BUT, out the guy flew, he SHOT backwards out of the cone, and took off running!  So, here I am with my cute yellow gloves, running all over the dang farm chasing this mean rooster (bleeding…him, not me).  Down the hill to the barn, halfway back up the hill, then down the hill again, all the while Pat is right there with me as we try to trap him any way we can.  FINALLY, after much huffing and puffing, he goes into the old chicken coop room in the barn, and I step in behind him, closing the door.  Just before, I had told Pat we might just have to shoot his A**, so she was just heading towards the house to get the 22.  I hollered for her to come hold the door since there is no latch on the inside.  I get him, and up the hill we go, and the deed is done! (FINALLY).  Pat and I look at each other, and say…aren’t we getting ready to do 900 or so more of these?  We better improve our skills pretty quickly!  WHAT are we doing??

So, Karl spent the next couple of days resting in the cool refrigerator, before we sent him off to Hamilton Beach last night.  OOPS, I think the heat of the Beach got to him, oh well, he will be the star of the Tortilla Chicken (rooster in this case) soup tonight!

2011 ADGA Linear Appraisal

We are proud to announce that we will be involved in the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) Linear Appraisal program this year. This will be our 3rd time so far being involved. Thank you to Kelly and Flights of Fancy Farm for being a generous and gracious host this year.

What is Linear Appraisal and why participate in it?

Linear Appraisal is one of the performance programs offered by the ADGA. It is an evaluation program to help you understand what are weak and strong points in your goats, what needs to be improved overall in your herd, and it helps you to better understand conformational points in your goats. It also helps to determine whether or not the bucks you are using in your herd are improving daughters over dams, or setting your breeding program behind. It is an invaluable program for breeders!
